SOURDOUGH FIRING TILE PAINTING

2025

I apply the Raugo technique in ceramic images composed of tiles made from low-firing clay.

These compositions are created from bisque-fired tiles which, after firing at approximately 900°C, are immersed in sourdough starter and sprinkled with sugar. Firing thus becomes not only a technological process, but also a carrier of meaning, a record of fermentation, transformation, and time.

The use of sourdough and sugar refers directly to my genealogy: I am the great-granddaughter of Polish emigrants who worked on sugar beet farms on the Danish island of Falster, and the granddaughter of a baker and a confectioner. Fermentation becomes, for me, a shared denominator linking bread, yeast, and sugar.

The sourdough starter used in this process was kindly provided by a local baker, Mr. Czesław Jurgiel, whose bread oven has been in continuous operation since 1937. As a result, the Raugo technique in my practice becomes not only a firing method, but also a personal and cultural narrative - one that speaks of memory, local values, and relationships.
